Two Fresh Paths to Painting: Color Strategies and Content.

Introduce myself. Education, book, DVD

We will study the color strategies in several ways to begin to internalize them. (Digital presentations, finding and painting examples.)
We will explore how these strategies relate to content.

Why?

What takes a painting from being a Agreat start@ or a pretty picture to being a finished and competitive painting? It boils down to just 3 things. Color, Design and Content. Today we will have time to cover two of these-color strategies and content. Why?

1. By getting you colors under control (at any stage of your painting) you unify your paintings and provide a color dominance. These are the two most important design principles.

2. Content means more that what is the topic of your painting. It means putting yourself into your work through personal style, personal subject matter and an almost intangible personal means of expression. In truth, Content is everything.

Elements and Principles of Design. They are Nouns and Verbs, essentially.
Web of interaction that is extremely complex, but all of the principles relate to color, one of our topics for the day.
But you should have them within easy reach.
Ways of creating a focal point. Some of them depend beautifully on a color strategy.

Color Strategies

AM
Color Strategy Handout.
There really seem to be only EIGHT COLOR STRATEGIES

Color strategies often denote moods and content, which we will discuss in more detail this afternoon.

I first came across these color strategies in Miles Batt=s self-published book, The Complete Guide to Creative Watercolor, 1992.

Review them with the class.

Pp presentation:

Show actual paintings

Find examples of the strategies in magazines and paste them onto a piece of watercolor paper.

Do two or three small paintings in different color strategies on the same piece of watercolor paper. Try more at home.

Draw your personal objects on your Arches paper.

Choose a color strategy that fits the mood of how you feel about these objects.
Write this mood on the tape holding down your painting.

Choose a color strategy that is not too far afield from the local colors of your personal objects, but still reflects a certain mood.

OR go wild. Be careful not to totally confuse your viewers, though. Blue suns just don't work. But be as adventuresome as you can.

Mid-Afternoon:

Show tweaking a painting to achieve a color strategy.

Teach correction technique. ARCHES ONLY.
Need painting to tweak.
